I've stayed in a lot of city hotels across Tokyo, Paris, New York, Singapore, the usual circuit. Four Seasons Bangkok is one of the best luxury city hotels I've ever experienced.

So when people ask me how it compares to Capella Bangkok, the new neighbor that keeps sweeping the awards lists, my answer isn't as simple as you'd think. They share a driveway and river shuttle. You can walk from one lobby to the other in about three minutes. But once you step inside, these two hotels feel like they belong to completely different trips.

The rooms at Four Seasons are quiet, plush, and deliberately subdued. The beds are among the most comfy beds I've experienced. Living up to its reputation.

One small gripe: the blackout curtains are only controllable from one side of the bed which feelsl like an big oversight.

Every room at the Capella has a full, unobstructed river view. No partial views - a real differentiator and that’s one of the things I really love about the hotel!

The balcony is generous for Bangkok. But so much space goes to the balcony that the bathroom feels tighter than it should.

One serious flaw: plumbing noise. When someone in a neighbouring or upstairs room runs the water, it sounds like it's happening inside your room. The difference between ambient silence and plumbing noise is dramatic. For light sleepers, this could ruin an otherwise excellent room.

The Villas: What Everyone's Talking About

Winner: Four Seasons. Bigger rooms, better bathrooms, sharper tech. The Capella's guaranteed full river view from every category is a genuine advantage, but the overall room experience at the Four Seasons is more polished.

Hotel Facilities

Four Seasons

Feels like a resort right in the heart of Bangkok. The pool sits at ground level facing the Chao Phraya, resort-scale with comfortable loungers and Riva restaurant on one side, Brasserie Palmier on the other. Lunch and a long swim fold into each other naturally.

The river promenade has deep couches right along the water and the hotel keeps it open for guests rather than roping it off for events.

I didn't have chance to try the spa but heard a lot of good things about it.

Capella

You are good but i'm waiting for you to be great... Pool is tidy but unremarkable and common areas are limited.

The riverfront is essentially a blank lawn, a bit muddy last time we visited, and gets rented out for cocktail parties more than it gets used by guests.

The spa turned out to be the surprise. From the scent to the music to the furniture, every detail was curated beautifully. If you're staying here, book a treatment. The gym next door is functional, nothing more.

Winner: Neutral. Four Seasons for pool, grounds, and overall space. Capella for the spa experience.

Dining

Four Seasons

My experience at Yu Ting Yuan, the Michelin star Chinese restaurant onsite, was nothing short of exceptional. Melt-in-mouth Peking duck and juicy dimsum.

The space itself is luxurious without being stuffy, just perfect for a dinner date. We'd eat here even staying across town.

Riva handles breakfast, and it's the best hotel breakfast in Bangkok. Full stop.

Social Club also worths a visit and it is a rum-forward bar I think.

Capella

Côte - 1 star Michelin restaurant offers set-menu only. I'll be honest: that's not for me. I prefer to choose what I eat. But I understand the appeal, and the reviews from others have been overwhelmingly positive. If you enjoy surrendering to the kitchen, this is likely to be a highlight.

Stella

Afternoon tea is the Capella's single best food experience and one of the best in Bangkok. Curated tea cart, seasonal pastry spreads, standout bites. Worth visiting even if you're staying next door.

Sadly breakfast at Phra Nakhon was a low point. What appeared to be a buffet restaurant had no buffet at all, just a small selection of breads and an à la carte menu. I ordered two of the three types of eggs Benedict on offer. Both arrived with a visibly broken hollandaise. I flagged it to the server, who didn't understand. I asked him to show the chef. Five minutes later: the same broken sauce, re-plated.

The first mistake is forgivable. That the kitchen didn't recognise the problem is harder to excuse at this level. Thank God for the granola, which was incredible and saved breakfast.

Winner: Four Seasons. More venues, better breakfast, and a Michelin restaurant you can actually order from. But do yourself a favour and walk next door for afternoon tea at the Capella.

Service

Four Seasons

Staff don't perform. They just get it right. No hovering, no disappearing. Check-in takes five minutes. Questions get answered the first time. At 299 rooms the consistency is really impressive.

Capella

Surprisingly it is a mixed bag. The highs were genuinely high. Afternoon tea service was polished, villa discretion was handled well, and room service spread I ordered instead of dining at Côte was excellent across the board.

But the lows were hard to ignore. Before arrival, I received an email from my assigned Culturist - guest liaison. They promised a personalised pre-arrival phone call and asked me to fill out an online preferences form. The first question asked whether I preferred email communication, which I did. I completed the form. No call came. No follow-up email either. The whole process felt clunky for no reason. The arrival lacked warmth, and the breakfast kitchen couldn't identify a broken sauce. At these rates, consistency matters.
