Grand Hyatt vs Hyatt Regency Bali: My Take Having Stayed At Both

Introduction

Two big Hyatts on the same sunrise coast, built back when Bali's idea of luxury was scale rather than twelve villas and a yoga deck. The Grand Hyatt Bali is a 636-room giant in Nusa Dua that opened in 1991. The Hyatt Regency Bali is the 1973 original in Sanur, re-opended in 2018 after a 5-year renovation.

After staying at both, I scored the Grand Hyatt at 7/10, and the Hyatt Regency at 8/10. The takeaway: The Hyatt Regency is the better hotel. The Grand Hyatt is the bigger destination.

Location and the beach

This is the single biggest difference - Grand Hyatt's Nusa Dua vs Hyatt Regency's Sanur. Sanur is quiet, peaceful, low-rise, and full of people biking along the beach - as I like to call it: old people's town. The Hyatt Regency opens onto a paved boardwalk that runs 6km up the coast, past actual shops run by actual people. Nusa Dua is a gated, manicured government project, about as connected to daily Balinese life as a duty free shop. The Grand Hyatt has the best position within it, right next to a mall called Bali Collection, which in Nusa Dua counts as a thrilling amount of freedom.

The sand is a different story. The Grand Hyatt's beach runs over 500 metres with proper depth, the cleanest stretch on the island, and even full occupancy can't crowd it. The Sanur sea is shallow and tidal, with darker sand, and water color that heavily depends on the season. If the beach is the holiday, Nusa Dua wins this one walking away.

So: best neighbourhood, the Hyatt Regency. Best beach, the Grand Hyatt, and it isn't close either way.

The rooms

The Grand Hyatt's rooms are the most traditional things on the property: dark timber, heavy furniture, Balinese carving, designed before anyone thought to put a USB port in a bedside table. I like them, they look like they belong on this island, but they can feel very dated.

The Hyatt Regency's rooms are newer, monochrome, and the bathroom beats the Grand Hyatt's without breaking a sweat: big shower, double vanity, full soaking tub. Go for a ground-floor room (also called Premium rooms), as the buildings slope outwards so the lowest floor gets the deepest footprint and a terrace.

Dining

The Grand Hyatt has more variety: breakfast at five venues with the same spread at each, so you eat near your village instead of hiking, plus Indonesian at Watercourt (the gado-gado was superb and roughly the size of a car tyre), Japanese at Nampu, a dinner-and-dance show at Pasar Senggol, and a genuinely good rooftop bar above Salsa Verde, the one place on site where the holiday becomes a drink in the dark. The on-site options at Hyatt Regency is more limited: Omang Omang feeds you well and forgettably three times a day. Though the property connects to the Andaz next door which opens up a few more options.

The biggest difference sits outside the gates. The Hyatt Regency opens onto the Sanur boardwalk, where a restaurant dinner costs much less money. Some of favorites: Brasserie Republique, The Restaurant, and Soul on the Beach. The Grand Hyatt offers Bali Collection mall, which is resort food with a walk attached. That freedom wins the Regency the category, 8 against 7.

Better dining on-site: Grand Hyatt. Better dining outside the gates: Hyatt Regency.

Gardens and pools

Both properties are green giants that make the modern beige boxes look like a mistake, so this comes down to what the green is for.

The Grand Hyatt's answer is water. The main pool is a connected system of pools, grottos and water features sprawling through the gardens, and there is more swimmable water here than any modern property on the island offers at any price. Then there are three more pools playing hide and seek: one behind a village, one reachable only through the fitness centre, one reserved for club guests. A short stay isn't enough to find all of it, and I mean that as a compliment.

The Hyatt Regency's answer is the gardens themselves, Made Wijaya's work, with the pools woven through the greenery rather than parked out front. The courtyards are planted so thickly you can barely see the other side. The layout exists to serve all this green.

Most water: the Grand Hyatt. Better gardens: the Hyatt Regency.

Kids

No argument here: both are properly set up for children, with real kids' clubs, kids' pools, and grounds built to absorb an afternoon of running. The Regency's Camp Hyatt is dinosaur-themed, takes ages 4 to 12 from 9am to 6pm, and one morning I passed a line of them feeding the lily pond fish with coconut shells. The Grand Hyatt's club plays the same game with better arithmetic: two free hours a day against the Regency's one. Either way the children win.

Service

The widest gap on the card, 9 against 7. At the Hyatt Regency several staff knew my name by the third morning and the chat that followed had clearly not been read off a card; the place smells strongly of repeat guests. The Grand Hyatt visibly tries, but across 636 rooms nothing going wrong is a real achievement, but it never quite reaches high-touch. Nobody here is anticipating your coffee order. It's mega resort afterall.

Choose Grand Hyatt Bali if

- You're travelling with children who consider water a full-time job. Nothing on the island offers this much of it.

- The beach is the point. Five hundred metres of Nusa Dua's cleanest sand settles the argument.

- You want the holiday fully contained: lot of dining options on-site, multiple pools, no taxis.

- Nusa Dua's gates read to you as peace rather than quarantine.

Choose Hyatt Regency Bali if

- You want to walk out of the hotel into somewhere that feels like Bali, not a campus.

- Service matters more than square metres. This is as good as it gets at the price.

- Gardens are the point of the island for you. Wijaya's are the best I've stayed in.

My recommendation, by trip

Family with young children: the Grand Hyatt. The water does the parenting and the beach absorbs whatever's left.

Couples: the Hyatt Regency, easily. The Grand Hyatt at its quietest is still a campus; the Regency at its busiest is still a garden.

First trip to Bali: the Hyatt Regency. Sanur is at least on speaking terms with the island you flew here to see. If you do pick Nusa Dua, don't make it your only stop.

Long, lazy stays: the Hyatt Regency. If I never reviewed another Bali resort, it's where I'd quietly keep going.
