Grand Hyatt Bali Review: Pools, Kids Clubs and Everything You Need to Know

Introduction

Despite its older age, the Grand Hyatt Bali is one of the best value luxury resorts in Nusa Dua, especially if you're traveling with kids under 12. It sits on 41 acres of beachfront with five pools (two have waterslides), a really solid kids club, and one of the longest private beach stretches in Nusa Dua. It's also right next to Bali Collection, which is a mall filled with local food and shops. This helps massively because Nusa Dua is quite isolated - outside of resorts there's not really much to do. Parts of the property are showing their age, but for the sheer amount of space, things to do, and what you're paying, nothing else in Nusa Dua really competes.

Arriving

The drive from Ngurah Rai Airport takes about 15 to 25 minutes via the toll road. Once you walk into the check-in area, it hits you immediately - this place is massive. Forty-one acres of tropical gardens, lotus ponds, little waterfalls everywhere, split into four village-style clusters. Check-in can be chaotic depending on the time. I had to wait 15 minutes to be done with it. But the staff bring you cold towels and welcome drinks while they sort the paperwork, and then someone walks you (or golf-carts you) to your room, which makes the whole experience a lot more enjoyable.

Settling Into the Room

The rooms are spacious - about 50 square meters - but the interiors feel dated. This is pretty common for first the wave of Bali resorts that went up in the 90s and 0s. Everything works, it's clean, it just doesn't have that fresh modern feel. If I'm not mistaken, the last time they did a renovation was 2015 - more than 10 years ago. Hopefully they'll do a full renovation in the next few years. Every standard room comes with a daybed that doubles as an extra bed for kids, which is a nice touch since most resorts charge you for a rollaway.

For bigger families, connecting rooms are available in a king + twin configuration. Availability can be hit or miss, but if you book through a Hyatt Prive partner like us, we have the ability to guarantee the connecting rooms in-advance.

If you want a quieter experience, the Grand Club upgrade might be worth it. Same room size, but you get lounge access with breakfast, all-day drinks, evening cocktails from 5 to 7 PM, and an exclusive pool that's way calmer than the main areas. You also get access to the club breakfast, which is smaller in food variety but much quieter than the main buffet.

Morning: Breakfast and the Beach

Breakfast at the Garden Cafe is a big production - multiple stations with made-to-order eggs, fresh fruit, Indonesian dishes, the works. Go early or go late, because the 8:30 to 9:30 window is a zoo.

After breakfast, the beach. Nearly 700 meters of white sand - the longest private stretch in Nusa Dua. The water is calm and shallow thanks to a barrier reef, so at low tide kids can walk out a couple hundred meters and still be standing. They've got kayaks, paddleboards, and boogie boards at the water sports center, and a playground right on the sand. During dry season (April through October) the beach is consistently great. Rainy season, some seaweed washes up after storms - the staff do try to clear it frequently, but mornings won't always be pristine.

The Pools

Five pools, and unlike most resorts padding the count, they're all genuinely different. The main lagoon pool is 120 meters of winding pool lined with frangipani trees - great for a lazy afternoon with poolside drink service. But the star is the Garden River Pool. It's shaped like a river, surrounded by volcanic rock formations, and has a 50-meter waterslide that snakes down a grassy hill. You will find plenty of loungers available everywhere. There's a second 56-meter caterpillar slide in the kids zone, rock ledges for jumping, and shallow wading areas for toddlers. The infrastructure shows its 1991 origins in spots, but the kids could not have cared less. The only drawback is there's no swim-up bars, though it was not a deal breaker for me.

When you need a break, the Balinese Feature Pool is the photogenic quiet one with cascading waterfalls, and the Bay Club pool is adults-only - connected to the sauna and steam room. Drop the kids at the club, come here, reset. Pools close at 7 PM, which is not ideal, especially for someone who loves swimming at night like me.

Dropping the Kids Off

The Oceania Kids Club (ages 4-12, open 9 AM to 6 PM) is one of the better ones in Nusa Dua. They do coconut leaf crafts, Balinese mask-making, cooking classes, kite building, and bunny feeding. They keep two rabbits on site, which if you have a five-year-old, you know is basically the greatest thing that has ever happened. You get 2 free hours per day which is great; extra hours are charged per hour. It skews younger - ages 4-8 is the sweet spot. Kids over 10 might find it a bit boring, but there's plenty else to do on the property. There's also a toddler club for kids under 4, but an adult have to be there, either you or a hired nanny.

With the kids sorted, the Kriya Spa is right there. Twenty-four individual villas set in the gardens. Their signature 60-minute Balinese massage costs IDR 1,543,500 (~$97 USD) with service charge already included, so no need to tip. My Prive credit covers it entirely which was lovely.

Dinner

Four restaurants, but let me cut to what matters. Pasar Senggol is the one you don't skip - an open-air Balinese night market that runs Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings with a buffet spread (satay, suckling pig, lobster, rendang) and a full cultural performance with Kecak, fire dance, the works. The kids were completely locked in, even the one who normally can't sit through anything. Easily the best dinner experience in Nusa Dua.

Nampu is the best sit-down option - Japanese and teppanyaki, and the sake pairing dinner is excellent. Salsa Verde is their on-site Italian restaurant - casual by day, candlelit date night spot after dark. Most of the restaurants have kids menus with the usual burgers, spaghetti, and the like, so feeding the fussy kids should not be a problem.

Fair warning: restaurant service can be slow. Like, really really slow sometimes. If you're dining with young kids, order early and know that room service is a perfectly valid move on nights when everyone's running on fumes.

After dinner, the Veranda Lounge is my favorite place - it overlooks the ocean with live music and a genuinely relaxed vibe. Salsa Bar on the rooftop is the sunset spot if you time it right before dinner.
